Your radiator coolant might not be something you think about every day – but it’s essential to keeping your engine running smoothly, especially during those chilly winter mornings or hot Aussie summers. Whether you’re headed down the coast or just doing the daily school run, your cooling system is working hard behind the scenes.
So when should you check your coolant? And how do you do it safely? Let’s break it down.
Why Coolant Matters
Coolant (or antifreeze) stops your engine from overheating in summer and freezing in winter. It also helps prevent corrosion in your radiator and engine. If your coolant is too low, too old, or too dirty, you could face expensive repairs down the track – like a blown head gasket or warped engine components.

When Should You Check It?
We recommend checking your coolant every 3 months or 5,000 km, whichever comes first – or before any big road trips.
Also keep an eye (and nose!) out for signs like:
- A rising engine temperature gauge
- Sweet-smelling odours under the bonnet
- Coolant leaks or puddles under your car
- Steam coming from the bonnet
If you notice any of those, it’s time to check – or better yet, bring it into us.
How to Check Your Coolant – Safely
Safety first: Never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot!
Here’s how to check your coolant level:
- Wait until your engine is completely cool.
This is usually best done in the morning before you start the car. - Locate the coolant reservoir.
It’s usually a translucent plastic tank near the radiator with “Min” and “Max” level marks. - Check the level.
The coolant should sit between those marks. If it’s low, you can top it up – but use the right type (ask us if you’re not sure). - Check the colour.
Coolant should be clean and bright – often green, red, or orange. If it’s rusty, milky, or sludgy, it’s time for a flush.
