Winter Tyre Care: Keep Your Car Safe and Steady This Season

As temperatures drop and the roads get wetter, looking after your tyres becomes more important than ever. Winter conditions — even in milder Aussie climates — can affect how your car grips the road, how well it handles, and how safely it stops.

At FJ Manning, we want to help you stay safe on the road this winter with some simple tyre care tips and professional advice.

🚗 Why Tyre Condition Matters in Winter

Tyres are your car’s only contact with the road. In colder, wetter conditions:

  • Tread depth becomes crucial for water dispersal and traction.
  • Tyre pressure can drop with the temperature, reducing grip and increasing wear.
  • Uneven or worn tyres can lead to longer stopping distances and poor handling — especially dangerous in the wet.

That’s why winter is a great time for a tyre check or replacement if needed.

✅ Winter Tyre Safety Checklist

1. Check Your Tread Depth

The legal minimum tread depth in Australia is 1.5mm, but for winter driving, we recommend at least 3mm. More tread = better grip in the wet. If you’re unsure, come see us — we’ll measure it for you, no fuss.

2. Inspect for Cracks and Bulges

Cold weather can cause rubber to stiffen, making existing damage worse. If you spot any cracks, cuts, or sidewall bulges, it’s time to get your tyres checked.

3. Maintain Correct Tyre Pressure

Tyre pressure can drop as temperatures fall. Driving on underinflated tyres affects fuel efficiency, causes uneven wear, and reduces control. We’ll happily check and top up your pressure to manufacturer specs.

4. Rotate Your Tyres

Regular rotation helps tyres wear evenly, especially during winter when traction is more important. If it’s been more than 10,000km, ask us about a rotation service.

5. Check Your Spare

Don’t forget your spare! If you need it in an emergency, it has to be in good condition. We’ll inspect it and make sure it’s inflated and roadworthy.

🛞 Time for New Tyres?

If your tyres are worn or past their best, we stock a wide range of quality replacements to suit your budget and driving needs. We’ll advise you honestly and fit them professionally — no pressure, just good service.

❗ Pro Tip: Don’t Rely on “All Season” Performance

Even if your tyres are rated for all seasons, they still need checking. All-season doesn’t mean invincible — especially if they’re older or nearing the end of their life.
